Andrew Cashner injury: Padres pitcher to miss start of season after hunting accident

The San Diego Padres hurler reportedly lacerated a tendon in his thumb while dressing game meat on a hunting trip.

The San Diego Padres will likely be missing yet another one of their young starters for the beginning of the 2013 season. Andrew Cashner reportedly injured his thumb while dressing game meat on a hunting trip with a friend, puncturing the thumb and suffering a lacerated tendon, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.

Cashner will begin the season on the disabled list along with Joe Wieland and Cory Luebke, who are both recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said the doctors do not expect any long-term consequences for Cashner due to the injury, but it does leave the Padres in a bit of a bind. They signed free agent Jason Marquis to a one-year deal on Monday, but will likely seek another candidate for the starting rotation before the season begins.

Cashner pitched rather well for the Padres in 2012, his first year with the club. He came over from the Chicago Cubs in a deal that sent Anthony Rizzo to the Windy City. Cashner began the season in the bullpen, but was promoted to the rotation before a lat injury sent him to the disabled list. On the season, he notched a 4.27 ERA and struck out more than 10 batters per nine innings.
