Claudio Vargas signs minor-league deal with Blue Jays

The right-hander has been extended an invitation to spring training.

The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to terms on a minor-league contract with right-handed pitcher Claudio Vargas on Thursday. The Dominican native will receive an invitation to major-league spring training.

Vargas, who retired during the summer of 2011 after being cut by the Colorado Rockies' Triple-A affiliate, returned to baseball in 2012 when he signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He hurled 109⅓ innings for the Nashville Sound, allowing 112 hits (including 11 homers) while striking out 84. However, Milwaukee cut Vargas loose after 20 games, and he finished the season with Vaqueros Laguna of the Mexican League.

In his eight-year major-league career, Vargas has logged 217 games, including 114 starts, while playing for the Montreal Expos, Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Brewers, New York Mets, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He has not logged a major-league appearance since he threw 19⅔ innings for the Brew Crew, getting tagged for 28 hits, 10 walks, and 16 runs while striking out 18.
