Zack Greinke rumors: Dodgers, Rangers could compete against mystery team

The right-hander’s services are being hotly contested on the market.

Jim Cowsert-US PRESSWIRE

Though it was a quiet Winter Meetings for right-hander Zack Greinke, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Texas Rangers emerged as the front-runners for the ace's services. However, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman suggests that Los Angeles might believe Greinke prefers Texas. He also reports that Texas officials believe there could be a third team in the race.

The 29-year-old Greinke presents an interesting case, as some teams wonder whether he will be able to pitch under a microscope due to his past anxiety issues. However, the former Cy Young winner has been a solid bet to twirl about 200 innings per season, with the exception of 2011, when Greinke began the season on the disabled list with a broken rib, an injury sustained while playing basketball.

In 2012, Greinke split time between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, spinning 212⅓ innings while allowing 200 hits and whiffing 200 batters. Though his ERA between both clubs was 3.48, Greinke's season garners a 3.21 FIP.
