Twins listening to offers on Morneau, Mauer

Minnesota is willing to hear what other teams would offer for their M&M Boys.

Tom Szczerbowski

The Minnesota Twins dealt outfielders Denard Span and Ben Revere to rival National League East clubs during the Winter Meetings, and now they are willing to listen to offers on two of their franchise cornerstones, catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau.

Morneau might be easier to offload due to contract length, as he will be a free agent at the end of the 2013 campaign. The 31-year-old has an extensive injury history; in the last three years, he has suffered from post-concussion syndrome and undergone surgeries to his wrist, foot, knee, and neck. However, Morneau was able to stay relatively healthy in 2012, only requiring a stint on the DL for wrist inflammation, and hit .267/.333/.440 with 19 homers in 134 games.

Mauer’s contract could be a major roadblock for inquiring clubs; the backstop signed an eight-year extension worth $184 million, locking him in place through the 2018 season. The 29-year-old also has an extensive injury history, but like Morneau, the former MVP managed to stay on the field in 2012. Splitting time between catcher, first base, and DH, Mauer hit a whopping .319/.416/.446 and continued to be one of the largest offensive forces in the game.
