Brandon McCarthy signs with Diamondbacks, per report

The D-backs added another solid arm to an already deep rotation Friday when they agreed to terms with RHP Brandon McCarthy.

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a deal with free agent right-hander Brandon McCarthy pending a physical, according to KTAR 620's John Gambadoro.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman has confirmed the news and is reporting that the pact is of the two-year variety. Additionally, the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro has been told that the total value of his contract is $15.5 million.

The former Oakland Athletics pitcher is coming off a frightening head injury after being drilled by a line drive on Sept. 5, but he has since been cleared for all baseball activities and is expected to make a full recovery. Before undergoing emergency brain surgery, McCarthy was well on his way to his best season as professional, compiling a 3.24 ERA with 72 strikeouts and 24 walks in 111 innings.

McCarthy's ground ball tendencies should fit nicely in the not-so-spacious confines of Chase Field but it remains unclear where he will fit in with the Diamondbacks. Arizona already has Ian Kennedy, Wade Miley and fellow former Athletic Trevor Cahill penciled in their rotation and youngsters Trevor Bauer, Tyler Skaggs and Patrick Corbin were expected to compete for a spot as well. With Daniel Hudson also expected back from Tommy John surgery eventually, it's likely that GM Kevin Towers will now look to flip one of those aforementioned arms for a shortstop or a third baseman.
