Indians sign Mark Reynolds

The Cleveland Indians signed Mark Reynolds to a one-year deal worth $6 million with another $1.5 in incentives.

Joy R. Absalon-US PRESSWIRE

The Cleveland Indians inked Mark Reynolds to a one-year deal worth $6 million, according to MLB.com. The deal also includes $1.5 million in incentives, which could take the total value of the contract to $7.5 million.

The Baltimore Orioles declined to tender Reynolds a contract last month, making him a free agent. The Orioles were open to the possibility of bringing him back, but instead it looks like he'll be playing his baseball this summer in Cleveland.

Reynolds had a down year in 2012, hitting only .221/.335/.429 with 22 home runs - his lowest total since 2007. The Indians are hoping he can return to the production he put up in 2009 when he hit 44 home runs for the Diamondbacks and earned some down-ballot MVP votes.

Even if Reynolds repeats his 2012 season, it will be a welcome shot in the arm for the Indians’ offense. They received puny production from both first base and designated hitter last season, as they collectively posted OPS’s of .675 and .702 from those positions, respectively.
