WASHINGTON, D.C. - Everything seemed right for the Washington Capitals. After 50 minutes of scoreless hockey, Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin scored on the power play, giving the Caps a 2-0 lead that looked like it would surely hold.
Jets Vs. Capitals: Washington Lets Lead Slip Away In 3-2 Shootout Loss
It took the Jets almost 58 minutes to score, but they do so twice as they rallied for a 3-2 shootout win over the Caps.

Yet, the Jets had power play chances of their own - a 6-on-3 to be exact - with a chance to tie the game. As was expected, Winnipeg finally beat Tomas Vokoun with the rare three-man advantage (which happened because unbeknownst to him, Brooks Laich played the puck with a broken stick) to cut the lead to 2-1 with 2:15 remaining.
Twelve seconds later, while still on the power play, Winnipeg scored again when Dustin Byfuglien's dump-in attempt from center ice deflected off Karl Alzner's stick and past Vokoun. Just like that, it was 2-2.
The Jets ultimately won the game in a shootout, stealing a point from the Caps in a game that they should have won and needed to win. That one point cost the Caps their lead in the Southeast Division and a playoff spot for the time being. Washington hopes that does not come back to haunt them in April.
“That’s the way it happens,” Alzner said. “You get those two goals and you finally take a breath that you are up, with not too much time left. It just isn’t over until it’s over. That’s proof tonight.”
