The Houston Texans made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 2011, but it was still one of the most demoralizing seasons in franchise history. Why? Because they could have won the Super Bowl.
2012 NFL Offseason Needs: Houston Texans
The Texans were the most balanced team in the AFC this season. And then Matt Schaub was lost for the season with a lisfranc fracture after Andre Johnson spent much of the season hobbled by a hamstring injury. Even with T.J. Yates at the helm, the Texans still managed to win a playoff game, but the ceiling for this team is so much higher.
There is some work to be done on the roster without a doubt. But Houston is very close to contending for a Super Bowl.
Offense
Wide Receiver: Andre Johnson is one of the premiere wide receivers in the NFL, but the Texans have absolutely nothing on the other side of him. Houston’s lack of depth at wideout was painfully apparent when Johnson was nursing a hamstring injury this season. They have to upgrade the position.
Interior Offensive Line: Chris Myers and Mike Brisiel are both free agent this offseason, and the Texans will likely retain them. However, in the event that they aren't able to bring them back, upgrades will be need all along the interior of the offensive line. Wade Smith is the only interior lineman under contract, but he is the worst player of the bunch.
Defense
Nose Tackle: One of the very few weaknesses on defense for the Houston Texans is at nose tackle. The team lacks a true plug in the middle. It wouldn’t be surprising for the Texans to address the position on day two of the NFL Draft.
Secondary Depth: Glover Quin was hit or miss at safety for the Texans last season. Combine that with the potential departure of free agent cornerback Jason Allen, and Houston may need to bring in multiple defensive backs to bolster the depth in the secondary.
Front Seven Depth: This may be nit picking, but the Texans may need to spend some middle and late round draft choices on some front seven players, particularly at inside linebacker and 3-4 defensive end. Brian Cushing and DeMeco Ryans are outstanding linebackers, and the same can be said for Antonio Smith and J.J. Watt at defensive end, but if any of those players goes down with injury, there is not much behind them to fill the void.
