Over the next few days, we’ll start to get word of teams meeting individually with players. The NFL rule is that teams can meet up to 60 players at the Scouting Combine. They can bring in 30 non-local players to their facility after the Combine.
Thursday NFL Combine news and notes
According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired LSU defensive backs coach Ron Cooper. This could lead to a push for the Buccaneers to target Claiborne. Ronde Barber is pondering retirement and the team needs someone opposite Aqib Talib. Of course, Claiborne will have to be there. He could be looked at by the Rams and Vikings.
Quietly, Alabama running back Trent Richardson had his knee scoped and won't be working out at the Combine. Richardson suffered a knee injury during practice leading up to the BCS National Championship Game. Even with the injury, he carried the ball 20 times for 96 yards in Alabama's title win.
Late getting to this, but Stanford tight end won’t do drills at the Combine. He’s recovering from an ankle injured suffered Jan. 3 in the Fiesta Bowl. This shouldn’t affect Fleener’s draft status as he’ll be working out at Stanford’s March 22 pro day.
Meeting with the media on Wednesday, head coach Pat Shurmur said the Browns want to get a quarterback to compete with Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace.
Don't be surprised if Miami shows as much interest in drafting Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill as they do signing Matt Flynn of the Green Bay Packers. Mike Sherman, Tannehill's college head coach, is the new offensive coordinator for the Dolphins. Both players are largely unproven, but Tannehill would likely come much cheaper and the Dolphins don't have lot of cap flexibility. That is, of course, assuming the Packers won't use the franchise tag on Flynn, as is rumored.
