Ohio State left tackle Mike Adams told reporters at the NFL Combine the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins have talked to him about moving to right tackle in the NFL.
Adams is expected to be a mid-first-round pick, so both teams may just be kicking the tires in the event of a trade back. The Browns may also target Adams with the 22nd pick in the first round.
“If my name is called in the first round, I can’t even explain how I’d feel,” Adams said.
Browns, Redskins talk to OSU OT Mike Adams about moving to right side
Adams, who weighed in at 6-foot-7, 323 pounds, was suspended the first five games of his senior season. Adams sold his 2008 Big Ten Championship Game ring for $1,000, money he used on a tattoo honoring his deceased cousin.
"I've had some bumps in the road early in my career, but I let those things build my character rather than break it down," Adams said. "Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a bad guy. I may have made some mistakes, but I've learned from them."
Playing in the Big Ten, Adams has faced numerous top-level pass rushers. He said none were better than JJ Watt, Ryan Kerrigan and Adrian Clayborn. To match up with those players, Adams likes to watch film on Miami Dolphins tackle Jake Long and the Browns' Joe Thomas.
"Pass blocking, as they say, is where you make your money," he said. "It's something I pride myself on doing well."
Adams noted his strengths as blocking in space and playing through the whistle in the run game. But he wants to improve on his consistency in pass protection and said he has a tendency to over set. But if he's shifted to the right side, like the Browns and Redskins inquired, those weaknesses will be masked.
