In a puzzling move, Georgia tight end Orson Charles has chosen not to run today at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. After setting the mark for tight ends with 35 reps on the bench press, Charles was gaining momentum among the tight end class. He has even measured in at 6-feet-3-inches tall, which was taller than expected. Many expected him to continue to shred his classmates in the 40-yard dash. However, he has chosen not to run at the combine.
2012 NFL Scouting Combine: Orson Charles Chooses Not to Run
This is a terrible move. I have Charles as the best tight end in this draft class, and he was the only one at the position drafted in the first round of my latest 2012 NFL Mock Draft. Part of that prediction was the anticipation of Charles killing it at the combine. He is a tremendous athlete that will create match up problems for defenses at the NFL level. He is the best athlete at the tight end position available in this draft.
All eyes will now be on Charles at Georgia’s Pro Day on March 5. Orson Charles missed a huge opportunity to open some eyes this weekend. We’ll see how he performs in a few weeks, but this was a big swing and a miss.
