Alright guys, here’s a couple of quick notes that I took from the second group of offensive lineman today at the combine.
Combine Notes Day One: Offensive Line Group Two
- USC left tackle Matt Kalil, like David DeCastro earlier, was as advertised. Kalil was the top performer among all offensive lineman in the 40 yard dash clocking in with an official time of 4.99. For an offensive lineman to run sub-5 seconds, that's really good. More importantly he ran an unofficial 1.70 ten yard split (1.74 was the quickest among offensive lineman last year, for some perspective). Kalil also put up 30 reps on the bench press which is pretty good given his 34 1/2" arms. On top of all that he had the best three cone time of 7.33. Kalil effectively squashed any doubts (if there was any) and solidified his place as the top tackle in this draft class.
- David Molk, the center from Michigan, won the bench press with an impressive 41 reps. Molk is a solid center prospect that could be a potential future starter for a team in the fourth round. Meanwhile Wisconsin center Peter Konz could only manage a disappointing 18 reps. Konz is a legitimate first round talent but will need to improve on his pro day to avoid dropping.
- I liked a lot of what I saw from Nate Potter. The Boise State tackle projects as a mid-round tackle (probably on the right side) and helped himself today with good numbers and solid technique on most of the drills. He looked fluent and smooth when changing direction quickly.
- In similar fashion Bobby Massie, the tackle from Mississippi put in a good all-round performance. He didn't particularly stand out on one drill more than another, but he was solidly above average in most drills. Massie could work his way into the second round if he impresses during the rest of the draft process. At the moment he's probably a third rounder.
