Injuries thwarted what was once a promising season for the Kansas City Chiefs. Season ending injuries to Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry, Jamaal Charles and Matt Cassel buried the team in the early going.
2012 NFL Offseason Needs: Kansas City Chiefs
However, after the firing of Todd Haley, Romeo Crennel had the team playing inspired football, especially on defense. With key contributors coming back from injury, the Chiefs could find themselves right back in the playoff hunt again in 2012.
That being said, the roster is in need of some work this offseason. Let’s take a look at the biggest needs of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Offense:
Right Tackle: Barry Richardson is a complete sieve at right tackle. The Chiefs could have some options with the No. 11 pick in the draft. They need to make the position a top priority this offseason.
Quarterback: Matt Cassel is not the answer under center. Kansas City is in the process of building a competitive roster, but as long as Matt Cassel is playing quarterback, the team will not be able to compete for a Super Bowl. His arm strength simply is not there. The Chiefs need to find a long term answer.
Running Back Depth: Jamaal Charles will be back and ready to go, but the team could use another talented back to complement him.
Center: Casey Wiegmann turns 39 years old this summer. He won't be able to play forever. The Chiefs could slide Rodney Hudson to center, but either way they will need to add another interior lineman.
Tight End: Tony Moeaki will be back next season, but his injury displayed the complete lack of depth the Chiefs have at tight end.
Wide Receiver: I am listing this as a formality. Kansas City must, and probably will, retain Dwayne Bowe.
Defense:
Nose Tackle: Kelly Gregg played nose tackle for the Chiefs last season, but he is turning 36 in the coming year. Meanwhile, Jerrel Powe is the best player behind Gregg on the depth chart. Powe was a sixth round pick a year ago and is inexperienced. Kansas City may address the position on day two of the NFL Draft.
Linebacker Depth: The Chiefs are set at all of the linebacker positions, but they could use some depth players across the board.
Cornerback: The Chiefs recently signed Stanford Routt, which likely means Brandon Carr is not going to be re-signed. It would be wise for Kansas City to add another corner to bolster their depth at the position.
