2012 NFL Offseason Needs: San Diego Chargers

Another year, another underachieving team in San Diego. In a relatively weak AFC West, the Chargers struggled to an 8-8 record, missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

Norv Turner will once again be on the sidelines as the head coach of the Chargers, for better or for worse. San Diego hopes to have a healthier Phillip Rivers on the sidelines this year, after the star quarterback struggled through the 2011 season.

Defense is where the Chargers will need to focus their efforts this offseason. San Diego was shredded against the past due to an aging secondary and lackluster pass rush.

After the jump, check out a breakdown of the team needs of the San Diego Chargers.

Offensive Line: The San Diego Chargers need to a do a better job of protecting Phillip Rivers. With Marcus McNeil constantly injured, Kris Dielman contemplating retirement because of concussions and center Nick Hardwick's expired contract, there are multiple areas of concern on this offensive line.

Wide Receiver: Vincent Jackson is one of the most high profile names on the free agent market this spring, and it would appear that the Chargers are not going to use their franchise tag on him. If he is not re-signed, San Diego will have to find an upgrade across from Malcolm Floyd.

Running Back: Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert formed a solid tandem in the backfield for the Chargers this season, but Tolbert is a free agent and the offense is lacking an element Darren Sproles brought to the table. Tolbert was a serviceable third down back, but someone with more game-breaking potential is needed.

Pass Rushing Linebacker: Larry English has been a complete no-show, and it's time for the Chargers to move on at linebacker. There are a handful of 3-4 rush linebackers that fit their draft slot in the first round. That would be the best place for them to find a long-term upgrade.

Secondary: Quentin Jammer is getting up there in age and may have to make a move to safety at some point during the end of his career. The Chargers need to find Jammer's eventual replacement at corner and decide if he is the answer across from Eric Weddle at safety.

Defensive End Depth: Vaughn Martin and Corey Liuget are capable 3-4 defensive ends, but with the departure of Luis Castillo on the horizon, some depth is needed at the position.
