Matt Kalil 2012 NFL Draft scouting report

Agility/movement: Kalil is a fluid mover in space and gets to edge in a hurry. At USC, Kalil didn’t pull or trap often. Gets out to the second level effectively and can block moving defenders.
Pass blocking: In pass protection, Kalil has a good kick slide and power step to hold the edge. Shows good patience to not overreact. Lets the defender come to him. Has long arms and knows how to use them to ride pass rushers around the pocket and away from the ball. Kalil’s patience at the line allows him to adjust to stunts. Didn’t give up a sack in 2011.
Quickness: Initial quickness on the snap was inconsistent prior to his junior year. In 2011, he showed an improved first step. Used on the field goal block team because of his step off the ball.
Run blocking: Because he’s still adding core and lower body strength, Kalil is unfinished in his run block development. If he can add power and know how to use it, Kalil could be great in this area. He’s a player who loves to finish off blocks and really exerts his will upon defensive linemen. Uses his hands really well.
Strength: Will need to add strength to his lower half to handle NFL bull rushers better. Possesses a wide frame that can handle a lot more bulk without it negatively impacting his quickness.
Technique: Kalil’s footwork needs refinement. He’ll often raise a foot on contact or get too wide, limiting his mobility against the inside move. Knows how to properly use his hands. Keeps inside the opponent’s numbers to neutralize. Shows good effort to finish off blocks.
Final word: Kalil is an optimum left tackle prospect with quick feet, toughness, smarts and a frame that can get much bigger. Because of his size, Kalil may only be scratching the surface of how good he can be. Has the potential to be on the NFL’s top pass blockers early in his career.
