Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III had a revealing interview on Friday with Sports Illustrated football writer Don Banks. Among many subjects they covered, Griffin stated his case for being the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and not Stanford's Andrew Luck.
Robert Griffin III: I’m the best in everything I’ve done
“If I had to straight up tell a head coach or an owner why they should take me, it’s because I’m the best in everything I’ve done,” Griffin told Banks. “I’m the most accurate. I have the strongest arm. I may not be the tallest. I may not be the heaviest. But I’m the best quarterback in the nation, and if they pass on me, then I understand. But I’m going to go out and be the best quarterback for somebody else.”
Griffin’s tone and dialogue in the interview contrasts with how he often spoke to the media during the season. Throughout the year, Griffin was often reserved in discussing his own talents. But now that he’s officially in the draft, it’s nice to see his confidence. It’s sort of reminiscent of a rookie Tom Brady telling Patriots owner Robert Kraft he was the best decision the organization has ever made.
Like Brady, Griffin has the talent to back up his words. Now he just has to prove it to NFL talent evaluators over the next couple of months. As Albert Breer of NFL Network pointed out in January, Griffin's stock is "all over the map." As we saw with Cam Newton last year, though, things can change dramatically between now and April. As this time last season, few were lauding Newton as the top overall pick and several considered Blaine Gabbert a better prospect.
For Griffin, it will be difficult to overtake Luck as the top overall pick. But he has the talent to back up a serious case as to why he should be the top pick.
