While making the rounds during Super Bowl week, head coach Jeff Fisher told Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he'd be to the Rams trading the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
2012 NFL Draft: Jeff Fisher open to Rams moving No. 2 pick
“There are going to be teams that have some interest in that pick,” Fisher told Miklasz. “What we do will define the future of this franchise moving forward. If we stay there who do we take, if we move down who do we take. What if we move down and come back up. That’s going to define the future.”
Fisher also vowed that this year would be the last the Rams would have the second pick in the draft. If true, it would be an accomplishment in and of itself. The Rams have had the first or second pick four times in the last five years.
But back to having the No. 2 pick right now. Here’s what I wrote about it in my last mock draft:
The Rams will be taking several phone calls to trade out of this pick. While adding picks would be nice for the Rams, having a franchise left tackle is the most important piece this team can add. If the Rams trade down to a team wanting Robert Griffin III, they won't be able to get a player as good as (offensive tackle Matt) Kalil. That's what the Rams will be choosing between. If they want Sam Bradford to develop, they need Kalil more than anything else. He would start at left tackle with Rodger Saffold shifting to the right side.
That's right, I put the word "add" twice in one sentence. But I remain confident in the opinion on what the Rams should do. The Rams could get a bounty of picks to trade out, but they shouldn't pass up Kalil. Don't let the bad pick of Jason Smith cloud whether or not they should draft Kalil. This is a completely different front office (which doesn't even have a general manager, which really makes this discussion fruitless).
