Dre Kirkpatrick, one of the top cornerbacks available in the 2012 NFL Draft, will not be prosecuted for a marijuana possession charge, according to ESPN.
2012 NFL Draft: Dre Kirkpatrick’s Drug Charge Dropped
The former Alabama standout was considered by many to be a top ten draft before he was arrested on possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana on Jan. 17.
Kirkpatrick claimed to have no knowledge of the weed being in the car, and that may have lead to the charges being dropped.
“The guy who we gave a ride to came forward and signed an affidavit that the weed was his,” Kirkpatrick told Liz Mullen. “I didn’t even know it was there.”
The dropped charges certainly helps Kirkpatrick’s draft stock, but damage has still been done. Teams will be treading lightly with the 6-foot-2, second-team All-American in the pre-draft process.
Drug charges are often overblown, but what teams need to find out is how seriously this guy will be able to take football. Football is about to become a job for Kirkpatrick. He needs to prove to teams that he has learned from this and realizes the type of people he needs to surround himself with. This incident has probably cost him some money already.
