Over the last few months, there have been rumors that Oakland A's GM Billy Beane would leave the team, in part due to frustration over the delays regarding the club's possible move to San Jose. He was linked for a time in connection with the job with the Cubs that eventually went to Theo Epstein.
Athletics Extend Billy Beane Through 2019
Tuesday, both Beane and team president Michael Crowley got contract extensions, according to Jon Erlichman of Bloomberg Television:
#Exclusive: A’s Lew Wolff tells me he’s extending contracts of Beane, Crowley to ‘19 b/c “I view them as partners as well as execs”2019? Is that even a real year? Let’s see, carry the two... that’s seven years from now. In late December, reports were that the A’s proposed move to San Jose was going to be announced sometime in February.
There are 22 days left in February, so they still have time. Seven years beyond that will give Crowley and Beane plenty of time to build the franchise back into the winner it was during the early 2000s.
