Mike Holmgren defends Cleveland Browns’ attempt at trading for No. 2 pick in 2012 NFL Draft

President Mike Holmgren told Cleveland Browns season ticket holders today that their trade offer to the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft was "every bit the offer" the Washington Redskins made to acquire the choice.

There were reports that the Browns offered three first-round picks but not a second-round pick, which is what the Washington Redskins gave up. Holmgren said those reports were incorrect but wouldn’t specify what the Browns offered.

“I’m not sure any offer that was made was gonna be quite good enough,” Holmgren said. “Certain teams are gonna be out there in terms of what they offer. On that particular deal, we were very very aggressive, and it didn’t work.”

Long before the traded was made, it was long speculated that the Redskins had the best chance of a deal because of head coach Mike Shanahan’s friendship with Rams coach Jeff Fisher. That leaves the Browns to go in a different direction. Of course, Holmgren wouldn’t allude to what that direction may be but did say he “kind of discourage” general manager Tom Heckert from trading out of the fourth pick.

That likely means the Browns will be choosing between Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon, LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne and Alabama running back Trent Richardson. After losing running back Peyton Hillis in free agency, Richardson may be an attractive choice for the Browns despite the position being undervalued league-wide.
