For the third time in four seasons, the Jacksonville Jaguars own a top ten pick. Having traded into the top ten in the 2008 and 2011 drafts, this could be the fifth April in a row that the Jaguars will pick a player in the top 10. In an ideal situation, though, Jacksonville would move in the opposite direction in the 2012 NFL Draft. Gene Smith has said that the team will entertain the idea of trading back in the draft, according to Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union.
2012 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars Willing to Trade Back
The Jaguars have needs at wide receiver, defensive end and cornerback. With Morris Claiborne likely off the board, and debate over whether any of the wide receivers or defensive ends warrant the No. 7 overall selection, trading back would seem to be an ideal scenario for the Jaguars. Smith would have extra picks to work with to fill multiple needs.
Ryan Tannehill is the player teams may covet with Jacksonville's pick. The former Texas A&M quarterback has seen his stock soar leading up to the draft, and the demand for quarterbacks could make him a top-ten selection. The Miami Dolphins draft No. 8 and are actively attempting to find a new quarterback. If they strike out in free agency, Miami could set its sights on Tannehill, which would mean any team interested in him would have to jump the Dolphins to make him their quarterback.
That’s where the Jaguars come in. Things would have to fall into place, but if the outlined scenario becomes reality, trading back in the draft would be a dream scenario for Jacksonville.
