Presumably, Ryan Braun will once again be an outstanding player. And really soon, probably.
At Least Ryan Braun’s Teammates Know What Happened
Ryan Braun seems to have convinced his teammates that there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for his failed drug test. Meanwhile, the rest of us are left to wonder.
He's off to a slow start, though. Braun hasn't been playing in the Brewers' "road games" during spring training, and he's got just one hit all spring. It's reasonable to suspect that Braun's limited playing time, and perhaps even his limited performance when he has played, is related to ... well, you know.
Anyway, here’s Tyler Kepner with an interesting note in the Times yesterday:
Lucroy said there was more to the situation than Braun has said publicly, and his explanation to teammates, Lucroy said, has been convincing.
“I’m not going to get into the details, but if you knew what we knew, people would be like, ‘Wow,’ ” Lucroy said, adding that he understood why Braun has elaborated only in private. “You’ve got to do that because it’s his prerogative. It’s up to him, it’s his choice. And honestly, if some of the things came out, it would be a lot more negative than positive. There are reasons.“Well, okay. I can certainly accept the possibility that there are reasons why Braun failed his drug test, and that he felt comfortable sharing those reasons with his teammates but not the rest of us.
Here’s what I still can’t figure out, though ... If there were reasons for Braun failing the drug test, reasons that make us be like Wow, why did he stand before America and question the integrity of the guy who was hosting his urine for the weekend? That’s what I can’t figure out.
Braun can’t have it both ways. Either his urine, fresh out of his penis, was loaded with ungodly amounts of testosterone, but there were good reasons for that, or his urine was perfectly fine until something strange happened to it.
It seems like he’s giving his teammates the first explanation, and the rest of us the second.
Which is fine. He won his appeal and he’s really rich and he’s really talented, so Ryan Braun can pretty much do whatever he likes. But if he really wants to win his case in the Court of Public Opinion, he might need to do just a little bit better. Might even need to make us go wow.
I’m not saying he should do that. But he does have a choice to make.
