2012 NFL Draft: Alshon Jeffery improves his stock at pro day

As of a few months ago, things couldn't get much worse for Alshon Jeffery. The former South Carolina wide receiver was fighting off rumors of weight gain and a disastrously low 40-time to go along with the perception that he would not be able to separate from defenders in the NFL.

Jeffery lost some weight at the combine, but he did not run the 40-yard dash, instead waiting until today’s pro day at the University of South Carolina to put his speed on display.

It was worth the wait.

Standing in at 6-feet-4-inches tall and weighing 213 pounds, considerably slimmer than he was this fall, Jeffery ran his 40-yard dash in the high 4.4 to low 4.5 range, according to Pro Football Talk.

Considering some of the false rumors being tossed around, Jeffery’s 40 time may come as a bit of a surprise. Although many have questioned his ability to separate in the NFL, there is no questioning Jeffery’s big play ability down the field. Throughout his career as a Gamecock, Jeffery showed an ability to make plays down the field and win jump balls.

This workout will certainly help his draft stock, which had slipped out of the first round. The first round still seems like a bit of a long shot, but Jeffery certainly is making an interesting case for himself leading up to the draft. His ability to keep his weight down will be crucial in the NFL.
