Today must be the day of the draft bust. Ryan Leaf was arrested late last evening on drug, burglary and theft charges. Meanwhile, Charles Rogers, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, has yet to turn himself in on two arrest warrants, according to mlive.com.
Charles Rogers yet to turn himself in on two warrant, facing five charges
Rogers is charged with five misdemeanors in two unrelated incidents, according to the report. He is facing five charges, including possession of marijuana, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, which he was operating with a suspended license. The number of charges (5) is more than the number of touchdown receptions (4) that Rogers had during his NFL career.
The Detroit Lions made Rogers the second overall pick way back in 2003, and he returned their investment with 36 catches for 440 yards and 4 touchdowns over the span of three seasons before his career was over. Born in Saginaw, Mich., Rogers played college football at Michigan State University before being drafted by the home town Lions. With a chance to become a true hometown hero, the Spartan standout has done anything but make his fellow Michigan natives proud since being drafted.
I’m not sure what’s going on today. First Ryan Leaf, and now Charles Rogers. Draft busts are crawling out from the depths of obscurity to remind NFL general managers of how fragile draft choices really are. I wonder if we’ll hear from any of our other favorite blowouts before the day is up.
