The draft went from 12 rounds to eight in 1993, when there was limited free agency. The seven-round format started when unrestricted free agency began in 1994. In the first year of the seven-round draft, the Broncos selected Boston College center Tom Nalen with their last pick. Nalen was the 218th player drafted that year. He helped the Broncos win back-to-back NFL championships, in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
