In the final week heading into free agency, news around the NFL Draft is pretty slow. We are in the nitpicking season of the NFL Draft. And what better place to nitpick a prospect than on his interviews with NFL teams?
2012 NFL Draft: Dre Kirkpatrick reportedly unimpressive in interviews
Among the players who were not particularly impressive in interviews was Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, according to Dan Pompei of National Football Post.
It’s tough to say how much validity a report like this has, or even how much it matters, but the interview process was particularly crucial for Kirkpatrick after he was arrested for marijuana possession back in mid-January.
Kirkpatrick is a top-ten talent. His may have the most upside of any cornerback in this draft class. But as is often the case at this time of year, every off the field incident will be magnified, and answering questions about each incident is crucial.
These guys need to be able to play on the field, first and foremost. Would it be nice for them to be choir boys as well? Sure. But as long as a player can keep his head on straight and make football a priority after his first big pay check, teams shouldn’t be concerned.
But did Kirkpatrick, and other players trying to answer off the field questions, do enough to convince teams of that? We’ll find out in April.
