After a breakout sophomore campaign, Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones entered the 2011 season as a projected first round pick for the 2012 NFL Draft.
2012 NFL Draft: Landry Jones says he received a first round grade
By January, a step backwards in production had caused Jones to lose his luster as a prospect, and the question of whether or not he would declare for the draft was still lingering in the minds of many.
The Sooners were thrilled to learn that their quarterback would return to Oklahoma to play his senior season and delay entering the draft for another year. Most considered that a wise choice given his disappointing junior season. At least two quarterbacks were projected to be drafted ahead of him, and the first round was not a lock for Jones.
Or so we thought.
Jones has now come out and said that he received a first-round grade from the NFL’s Draft Advisory Board, according to Travis Haney of the Oklahoman.
This news comes as a bit of surprise. Though Jones said the advisory board did not inform him of what part of the first round he may be selected in, the fact that he received a first round grade at all. Whether or not he actually received that grade is tough to confirm, but at this point Landry’s word is all we have.
Now, the question becomes, should he have gotten a first round grade? And if he did, should he have entered the 2012 NFL Draft? How does he stack up to some of the top quarterback prospects in this class?
Personally, I’m surprised that he got a first round grade. I would not touch him in round one. But if he did indeed receive such high praise, he is a fool for not cashing in. If he thinks he was nitpicked this season, just wait until the scouts have another season of his film to break down.
