With Peyton Manning reportedly on the verge of free agency, it's only a matter of time before the rumor mill links him with any team currently without a Pro Bowl signal-caller. And if 49ers legend Jerry Rice has his way, his former team will be first in line.
Peyton Manning To 49ers? Jerry Rice Hopes So
Would you make a push for Manning?
"I would. If he's a free agent. I think you go for it. A guy of that talent, you've got everything in place. You've got a defense that smacks you in the mouth. You just need a little more out of the offense. That's not knocking what Alex [Smith] did. (Manning) can take you to a whole different level.
"If he goes to the Washington Redskins, and him going there, I guarantee they win 10 games. If he goes to Miami, they win 10 games. And I know what you're going to say: ‘If he's healthy ... '
"If he's healthy, he's going to have a chip on his shoulder and he's going to be pissed."
"[Jim] Harbaugh might be looking at this totally different."
For now, it seems that Harbaugh is in fact looking at this differently. According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, the team remains focused on signing Alex Smith to a long-term deal instead of holding out for a shot at Manning. It’s possible those talks could turn on a dime, though, as Smith and Manning are both represented by agent Tom Condon.
