You Get An Extension! And YOU Get An Extension!

That’s how I imagine contract extensions are doled out: Oprah gathers all the players in a TV studio, then starts dishing out the goodies to paroxysms of joy. Anywhoozle’s, here’s an incomplete list of players who have signed multi-year extensions this spring:

Joey Votto, 10 years, $225 million
Matt Cain, 5 years, $112.5 million
Ian Kinsler, 5 years, $75 million
Brandon Phillips, 6 years, $72.5 million
Andrew McCutchen, 6 years, $51.5 million

Alex Gordon, 4 years, $37.5 million
Derek Holland, 5 years, $28 million
Cameron Maybin, 5 years, $25 million
Jonathon Niese, 5 years, $25 million
Carlos Santana, 5 years, $21 million
Asdrubal Cabrera, 2 years, $16.5 million
Cory Luebke, 3 years, $12 million (with club options worth $7.5 and $10 million)
Jonathan Lucroy, 5 years, $11 million ($13 million if he reaches “Super Two” status)
Nick Hundley, 3 years, $9 million
Dustin McGowan, 2 years, $3 million

And more to come!

Are all these extensions simply an evolution in player compensation, a by-product of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, or just a fluke—nothing more than a random cluster? I leave it to you to speculate, dear reader. Regardless, if this keeps up, it’s only a matter of time before we get ours.
