BOCA RATON, FLA--In a tradition that dates back to their perfect season, members of the 1971-72 Miami Dolphins gathered at the Shoney’s in Boca Raton tonight to toast to the demise of baseball’s last remaining undefeated team, the Arizona Diamondbacks.
‘72 Dolphins Toast D’Backs Loss
“I haven’t been this worried since the Brewers went 13-0,” said Hall of Fame fullback Larry Csonka, referring to the 1987 Milwaukee squad that holds the MLB record for wins to start the season. “It was touch and go there for a while, but this just confirms, once again, that we were truly the greatest of all time.”
Told of the Dolphins’ celebration at the Diamondbacks’ post-game press conference, Arizona outfielder Justin Upton was nonplussed. “What are you talking about? Even the best baseball teams lose like 40 percent of their games,” he averred. “I guess they just like to get together and drink champagne,” he added.
Dolphins running back Eugene “Mercury” Morris was having none of that, though. “We had a name for that kind of attitude back in ‘72: ‘Loser talk.’ It takes real strength of character to go undefeated. The Diamondbacks are a good team, I’ll give them that, but they don’t have that special thing we had. We just refused to lose.”
