2012 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 44

The SB Nation two-round NFL mock draft continues along with each lead NFL team blogger making the pick for their team. We’re into the second round and the Kansas City Chiefs are back up with the No. 44 pick.

With the 44th pick in the 2012 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Central Florida cornerback Josh Robinson.

Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride breaks down the choice and I respond after the jump. For more on the Chiefs, make sure to check out ArrowheadPride.com. Also find more of Joel at SBNation.com where he’s the NFL editor.

Joel Thorman explains: The Chiefs lost CB Brandon Carr in free agency but replaced him with CB Stanford Routt. Routt’s deal with the Chiefs is essentially a two-year contract (no obligation from the Chiefs on the third year) so they’ll need someone to step in and take his place. Enter Josh Robinson. A prospect from a smaller school may need a little more time to develop and he’ll have all the time he needs in Kansas City as the Chiefs are set at starting cornerbacks for the 2012 season. In the short term, this is a depth move. In the long term, Robinson ultimately takes over as the starting cornerback opposite Brandon Flowers.

Dan Kadar responds: If the Chiefs want to add a player similar to Carr, it may not be Robinson. From a style perspective, Robinson isn’t the type of corner who will be physical and jam at the line like Carr did. A similar cornerback would be Oklahoma’s Jamell Fleming or Nebraska’s Alfonzo Dennard. But the potential for Robinson is higher. He’s one of the most productive cornerbacks in this class, finishing his three-year career with 30 pass breakups and 10 interceptions. If he can become more physical, he would be a suitable replacement for Carr.
