This year I wrote the player rankings and evaluations for the USA Today 2012 NFL Draft magazine. It’s on newsstands now and available online here. Leading up to the draft, I’ll be reprinting some of my quick reports here.

DeVier Posey, Ohio State
Height: 6'2, Weight: 213 pounds

Strengths: Displays good playmaking ability when the ball is consistently coming his way. Posey excels on comeback routes and shallow crossing patterns. His specialty is running vertical routes, despite not having elite speed. Gets off the line smoothly. Posey has quick feet and is strong enough to beat the jam.

Weaknesses: He’s a little inconsistent in and out of his breaks and needs to learn how fire quicker on his cuts. A tall-cut player and isn’t very elusive after the catch. Suspended five games in 2011 for selling memorabilia.

Combine quotable: (On training with Cris Carter) I’ve been in Boca Raton at XPE with Cris Carter doing a lot of speed work and a lot of position work. It’s just great to have a future Hall of Famer being able to tell you things the NFL is looking for, life in the NFL, how to approach this process, how to approach the next process, along with just polishing my routes and being able to critique me everyday and having that guy there, ‘oh no, go back, go back.’ If anybody knows Cris, he’ a perfectionist in what he does and hopefully I can add some of the things he taught me to my game.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
