This year I wrote the player rankings and evaluations for the USA Today 2012 NFL Draft magazine. It’s on newsstands now and available online here. Leading up to the draft, I’ll be reprinting some of my quick reports here.

Marvin Jones, California
Height: 6'1 7/8, Weight: 198 pounds

Strengths: Has a tall, lean frame. Jones’ body control is good and he can make tough catches away from his body. Shows a good burst after the catch and when he’s going into and coming out of his breaks. Really helped himself at Senior Bowl week, where he was a late invite. Solid blocking in the run game. Plays physical. Started a non-profit for inner-city children.

Weaknesses: Not overly physical off the line of scrimmage and struggles versus the jam. Rounds off his routes and relies too much on his speed and quickness to beat cornerbacks.

Combine quotable: (On his Senior Bowl experience) It was great. Any time you can come in and get some experience getting some good work, some high-level work with an NFL team, it’s a great opportunity. And being around the Vikings coaches, they were hard as far as the practice. We got in a lot of work, especially us adjusting. But it was great. It was a great opportunity.

This player should be a plug-and-play replacement for Mekhi Becton right off the bat.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
