Red Sox ‘Actively Exploring’ Trade Market For Outfielders

The Boston Red Sox were supposed to have hitting. The pitching, something of a concern, but the hitting wasn't supposed to be a problem. Then one day you wake up and Jason Repko is in the starting lineup. That's what happened after Jacoby Ellsbury went down with a shoulder injury on Friday. What's worse is that Repko is a) the second player the Sox called up, and b) probably the better option when compared to Che-Hsuan Lin.

So it makes sense that the Red Sox would at least explore the trade market for additional outfielders. From WEEI.com:

Even so, the team is planning on spending a not insignificant chunk of time without the runner-up in last year’s AL MVP balloting, and so it should come as little surprise that one major league source said that the Red Sox are “actively” exploring the market for available outfielders to determine whether the team will be able to shore up an area where there is limited organizational depth.

The article lists Coco Crisp as a potential target that two talent evaluators brought up to WEEI, though considering that he still has about $13 million left on his contract, that'd be a pretty steep price for a stopgap solution. If Ellsbury is going to be out for longer than a month or two, though, the Red Sox would probably prefer to do something drastic than cross their fingers and hope that either Repko or Lin -- or Darnell McDonald, who will probably get the bulk of the at-bats in Ellsbury's absence -- can hold their head above water.
