Blocking: Solid as a blocker in line, which is why he's highly regarded. Allen isn't simply a receiving tight end. He's strong at the point of attack and can even drive some defenders back. Above-average blocking on the move.
Hands/after the catch: Has the athleticism and body control to make spectacular catches like a big wide receiver. Will be a red zone weapon. Hands are good but inconsistent. Often lets the ball get into his body instead of snatching it out of the air. Consistently gained extra yards after the catch. Doesn't get too cute and immediately tries to work forward after the catch.

Release: Stays low off the line of scrimmage while getting into his route development. Allen is really good at staying at the line to block before working into his route progression. Has the strength to not get pushed around by defensive linemen.
Route running: Improved his route running dramatically as a senior. Takes quick cuts in and out of his breaks. Is good enough after the catch to be used on screens. Playing speed is only above-average, though.
Final word: Following a junior season of 50 receptions and eight touchdowns, Allen turned pro. He doesn’t have the size, speed or athleticism of Stanford’s Coby Fleener, but he’s a better all-around tight end. He’s a good blocker, in line and on the move, makes spectacular catches and has good on-field speed. Allen considered transferring before the 2011 season and has been an outspoken player in the past. That may turn off some coaches.
