This year I wrote the player rankings and evaluations for the USA Today 2012 NFL Draft magazine. It’s on newsstands now and available online here. Leading up to the draft, I’ll be reprinting some of my quick reports here.

Evan Rodriguez, Temple
Height: 6'1 1/2, Weight: 239 pounds

Strengths: Rodriguez has the versatility to line up at a number of positions, including tight end, fullback and H-back. May be best in the NFL as an H-back, which lessens his draft stock. Has good enough hands and is growing as a blocker, especially on the move. Strong hands (a Rodriguez handshake at the Combine nearly broke my hand) Difficult to take down after the catch. Good timed speed.

Weaknesses: Undersized and may not have a natural position in the NFL. Catches with his body too often. Not the most fluid of athletes in the open field. Struggles to quickly make cuts in his routes.

This player should be a plug-and-play replacement for Mekhi Becton right off the bat.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
