2012 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 51

With the 51st pick in the SB Nation NFL writer’s mock draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select running Oregon back LaMichael James.
JasonB, site manager for Bleeding Green Nation, breaks down the choice and I respond after the jump. For the latest on the Eagles, make sure to check out BleedingGreenNation.com.
JasonB explains: Last offseason, when the Eagles were signing everyone, one of the guys they went after but struck out on was Darren Sproles. Andy Reid has always loved his all-purpose, pass-catching scat backs that he can use to do pretty much anything in his offense. Now, Andy has another shot to get his Sproles. LaMichael James is the same kind of small, but speedy and shifty dual threat that Sproles would have been in the Eagles' offense.
And with LeSean McCoy likely on the verge of a huge new contract after he emerged as a top 3-5 back in the NFL last season, the need to get a backup to spell and protect him has increased. McCoy had more than 300 touches last season in part because he was so productive with them, but also because no viable backup emerged. James would give the Eagles a great compliment to McCoy and create arguably the shiftiest and hardest to corral backfield in the NFL with Michael Vick.
Dan Kadar responds:Although James would never be the next Bryant Westbrook for the Eagles, he would give them a similar kind of player. What’s questionable about James is his ability between the tackles and his blitz pickup. But if he goes to a team like the Eagles, he won’t be required to do either of those things as much. Don’t expect the Eagles to come out of the first two rounds of the draft without a weapon on offense. The only issue with the pick is there are some better running backs on the board. Virginia Tech’s David Wilson is like a big, faster version of James so he would make sense here as well.
