Mike Martin 2012 NFL Draft quick report

Getty Images

This year I wrote the player rankings and evaluations for the USA Today 2012 NFL Draft magazine. It’s on newsstands now and available online here. Leading up to the draft, I’ll be reprinting some of my quick reports here.

Mike Martin, Michigan
Height: 6'1 1/4, Weight: 307 pounds

Strengths: A former high school wrestling star, Martin has excellent footwork and knows how set his base to hold an area. Plays with a nasty demeanor. Shows good quickness for a tackle. Shows good range as a play develops and isn’t content to staying at the line.

Weaknesses: With his size and moderately short arms, there are some limitations to Martin’s game and upside. He’s not going to consistently win one-on-one situations with his power or quickness. May be only suitable for a rotation.

Combine quotable: (On his college position) I did a lot of switching. I played the zero and the three in the 3-4, and I played the one and three in the 4-3. I played with both hands down, so that helps me, and I have all that on film.

This player should be a plug-and-play replacement for Mekhi Becton right off the bat.

This guy’s got talent, plus playing with Patrick Mahomes automatically elevates his potential.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

This pick could help the Commanders build on last year’s excellent season.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.

This rookie would be a great complement to Jared Verse and Byron Young.
