This year I wrote the player rankings and evaluations for the USA Today 2012 NFL Draft magazine. It’s on newsstands now and available online here. Leading up to the draft, I’ll be reprinting some of my quick reports here.

Chris Polk, Washington
Height: 5'11, Weight: 222 pounds

Strengths: Polk is a thickly built, physical running back who is light on his feet. Has good quickness for his size. Gets moving downhill in a hurry and can be difficult to take down. Lowers his pad level and breaks tackles as well as anyone in the class. Carries the ball high and tight. Solid but not great in short yardage situations. Rarely fumbles.

Weaknesses: Doesn’t have explosive speed to hit the corner and get up field. Can get caught from behind. A one-gear runner. Can’t stop a run and get back up to speed fast enough. Not an elusive runner. Has had shoulder issues, which is troublesome given his running style.

Combine quotable: One of the most important things to me in the game of football is respect. I just want to earn respect, and make sure my opponent respects me, my coach respects me. I really pride myself on that concept because there’s non lift that you can possibly do in that weight room to prepare you. It’s an attitude. It comes down to how much heart you have.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
