Minnesota Vikings select Harrison Smith No. 29 in 2012 NFL Draft

After adding extra picks from Cleveland, the Minnesota Vikings had some picks to play with in a trade. With their targets likely off the board, the Baltimore Ravens added extra picks to get out of the first round. Minnesota gave up picks 35 and 98 to get back into the first round.

Instead of taking a wide receiver like Stephen Hill or an offensive lineman like Cordy Glenn, the Vikings went with somewhat of a surprise choice. Smith is a solid player, but not spectacular. The dropoff at safety, though, was huge after Smith.

Quick scouting notes: Has a nice build and is strong inside the box. Closes on the ball carrier in a hurry and is often a sure tackler. Gets into the backfield routinely. Reads the play well.
