Sean Spence 2012 NFL Draft quick report

Getty Images

Sean Spence, Miami Hurricanes
Height: 5’11, Weight: 231 pounds

Strengths: Spence has excellent athleticism, speed, and lateral quickness that he uses well to make plays on the football. He is very good at diagnosing plays then reacts quickly with his aggressive attacking style. He is rarely out of position even against play-action passes. He gives great effort and hustles to make the wrap up tackles, though not great, but is good enough to get the ball carrier to the ground. He uses very good instincts and anticipation to make plays against the run. He has the foot speed, timing, and burst to shoot gaps on pass blitzes. He takes good angles when in pursuit. He reads the quarterback well and flows to the ball quickly when in pass protection and has the athleticism to cover tight ends and running backs underneath.

Weaknesses: He is a bit undersized and can get engulfed by offensive lineman against the run. He can be too aggressive at times attacking the hole and allowing the running back cutback lanes. He does not have many pass rush moves blitzing from the outsides and can be stood up at the line of scrimmage. Needs to get stronger and bigger without losing his speed and burst.

Combine quotable: I can’t do nothing about my height, I think I bring great production all my years at Miami I was very production, if you just look at what I did on the field and not my height, you’re going to be very happy … I just tell them look at my production, of course I’m only 5-11, I can’t do nothing about it, but you know I have a big heart, I’m going to play hard for the team and I’m gonna make play.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
