A.J. Smith has done an outstanding job of accumulating talent for the San Diego Chargers in the first two rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft. On the draft's first night, Smith took advantage of Melvin Ingram's fall down the board, upgrading an anemic pass rush.

And to further improve the play of San Diego's front seven, the front office added Connecticut defensive lineman Kendall Reyes in the second round.

Reyes was considered a fringe first round prospect, so the Chargers have once again gotten solid value early in this draft. He gives San Diego great depth next to Vaughn Martin and 2011 first round pick, Corey Liuget. With Luis Castillo's future with the team uncertain, depth was definitely needed at defensive end. Reyes figures to be an excellent fit for the 3-4 defensive end.

From Dan Kadar’s quick report on Reyes:

Strengths: Faced extra blockers as a senior and still showed his ability to disrupt the pocket and get into the backfield. Is a fluid athlete who can shoot gaps nicely. Given his agility, his best fit in the NFL could be at 3-4 end.

Weaknesses: Often raises his pad level as the play develops. Will have to become more aggressive with his hands instead of relying on angles and openings. Needs to be more alert when the ball is being run between the tackles.
