2012 NFL Draft Results: Jacksonville Jaguars waste a Round 3 pick on punter Bryan Anger

The running joke is that nobody knows what Jaguars general manager Gene Smith is going to do when the NFL Draft rolls around. Usually his unpredictable moves involve drafting small school players or prospects nobody had linked to Jacksonville.

But this year, Gene Smith trolled us all worse than ever by selecting a punter, that’s right, a real punter, with a third round pick.

This is beyond mind boggling. Premium draft choices are reserved for more important positions. More important positions include just about every position on the football field.

The last time a punter was drafted in the third round was 2005, when the Kansas CIty Chiefs selected Dustin Colquitt. The Green Bay Packers also selected a punter, B.J. Sanders, in the third round back in 2004. Colquitt is sold, but Sanders was a horrible punter.

That's besides the point. Even if this Bryan Anger fellow turns out to be Shane Lechler, the third round is far too early for any punter.

Considering wide receivers Marvin Jones of California and Chris Givens of Wake Forest are still on the board, the fact that Smith wasted a pick on a punter is beyond confusing.

How’s this for a fun fact: Bryan Anger, a punter from the University of California, was drafted before any player from Florida, Florida State, Miami or Texas. I think my head is going to explode.
