Chelsea Agree To Deal With Marko Marin

Chelsea have agreed to a deal with Werder Bremen for young midfielder Marko Marin, who’ll be their first acquisition of the summer.

Chelsea have begun their summer retooling by agreeing to a deal with 23-year-old Werder Bremen midfielder Mirko Marin, which will become official in the summer. Both clubs have agreed to a fee, reported as €8M, and Marin has agreed personal terms on a five-year contract through the 2016-17 season.

It's an interesting move for Chelsea, who have a fairly similar player in Juan Mata already on the books, but with Marin's value down after a series of injuries over the past two years, this represents a cheap punt on a very talented player. The Bosnian-born Germany international is expected to spend most of his time as a central attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1, although he's also able to play winger should the Blues need him to.

It’s not the mega-deal that some were expecting out of Chelsea this summer, but Marin’s a good player who won’t break the budget. Whether or not this stops the club from going after more exciting targets in the transfer window is an open question.
