2012 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 20
With the 20th pick in the 2012 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft, the Tennessee Titans select Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick.
Jimmy from Music City Miracles checks in after the jump with his reasoning behind the pick and I respond. Make sure to check out MusicCityMiracles.com for the latest on the Titans.
Jimmy explains: The Titans need help at almost every spot on defense. Most people believe they will take the best defensive player available, and Dre Kirkpatrick is just that in this scenario. He has top ten talent, but has been sliding down draft because of his arrest earlier this offseason. Kirpatrick’s weakness is that he isn’t a very good man coverage guy, but the Titans don’t play very much man. He would be a perfect fit for their system. Adding him would allow them to keep Alterraun Verner in the slot where he is best.
Dan Kadar responds: It’s impossible to dislike this pick too much given the excellent value. From an on-field standpoint, Kirkpatrick is similar to Finnegan. So in that regard, there wouldn’t be much drop off in play by the secondary. The only real questionable thing about this choice is that it ignores the need along the defensive line. There is depth at both tackle and cornerback this draft, though, so the Titans couldn’t do wrong going in either direction.
