Peter Konz 2012 NFL Draft scouting report

Agility/movement: What makes Konz special is his pulling ability on sweep plays. If Wisconsin was running to the edge with a big back, it was often behind Konz. An intelligent player when working the second level. Can be ferocious on the move.

Pass blocking: Gets his hands up in a hurry in pass protection. Understands correct angles. Will push the defender to either side into the pile. Once Konz has his hands on a defender, they have a hard time shedding him. Experienced snapping direct and in the shotgun. Converted from tackle to center due to numerous injuries and stuck there.

Quickness: Resets his hands in a hurry to regain the advantage on defenders. Has a quick snap motion. Gets out on the move without a wasted motion.

Run blocking: He doesn’t get in the back’s way and offers just enough running room to create a lane. When he is playing in line, Konz is much better blocking to the right. He’s not as fluid or sudden working to the left. Rarely gets pushed back in the run game. Good patience on play action and draws to not blow the disguise. Adept at cut blocking. Can play in zone or a power scheme. Wisconsin used both in 2011. Could be a center or guard in the NFL.

Strength: Konz isn’t particularly a great drive blocker against defensive tackles and need to add strength throughout his frame. Pushed 225 pounds 18 times.

Technique: Because of his height, Konz always has to be aware of coming off his snap low so he doesn’t lose leverage. He’s not bad at it, necessarily, but could get better. Isn’t a waist bender. He makes up for his height by keeping a good base. Made the line calls and adjustments for Wisconsin. Known as being dedicated to film room work with teammate Kevin Zeitler.

Final word: Many consider the running backs at Wisconsin a product of the system. But the key to that system, is a great offensive line. With that in mind, the tackles at Wisconsin often get much of the credit. But it’s Konz who was the key to the Wisconsin run game. Whether he was working straight ahead or on a pull, the run play often came directly behind Konz. Has had a few nagging injuries through his career from blood clots in 2009 to a dislocated ankle in 2010.
