Here is a list of some small school players who I am expecting to have a good season. With a good senior season these small school players could be hearing their name’s called next April. This year, tons of the players on our Small School Rankings were given deals as UDFA’s and others were even drafted. This year there are some very valuable players as well. Find out what players made my list, and try to remember the names, because these kids will probably all be on an NFL roster next season. Brad Sorensen – QB – Southern Utah, Brad is an accurate QB who transferred from BYU where he redshirted. Sorensen has had a wild start to his NCAA career, as he played his first year at San Bernardino Valley College, where he earned first-team all-Foothill Conference honors after completing 177-of-296 passes for 2,280 yards and 17 touchdowns with just four interceptions before leaving for BYU. After red-shirting a year a BYU he decided to leave again and go to Southern Utah. Last year the 6’5, 235 pound was named the Great West Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. He finished by completing 288-of-425 passes for 3,143 yards and 17 touchdowns last year, ending on the Payton Award Watch List for the second straight year.
Washaun Ealey – RB – Jacksonville State, A Georgia Bulldog for two years under Mark Richt before transferring to Jacksonville State. Ealey the 5’11, 215 pound back is best known for his crazy 5 touchdown performance at Kentucky in 2010, and his 183 rushing yards at No. 7 Ga. Tech in 2009. Ealey ran all over the division last year at Jacksonville State, he could be a guy that teams will fall in love with. He has great vision and hits a hole with tenacity.
Aaron Mellette – WR – Elon, A big bodied WR, from Sanford, North Carolina has been making a name for himself on the field. In 2010, he lit it up with 86 receptions for 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns. The 6’4, 212 pound WR, followed that up last year with another huge season amassing 1639 yards on 113 receptions. He again had 12 touchdowns and has already scored 26 touchdowns on receptions. Teams have been looking for big bodied kids who can run, Mellette can do both.
Mark Jackson – OT – Glenville State, Big Mark Jackson is a huge mauler, who has pretty good feet for a big kid. He is 6’6 and weighs in at 330 pounds. He is no little kid, but watch out for this kid early and often, he could be a huge riser if he has another productive season. He has been a very bright spot for Glenville State.
Brandon Williams – NT – Missouri Southern, This kid is a space eater who can get to the QB. At 6’3 and 325 pounds, Williams is a beast. In 2010, Williams had 9 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. This kid is a big kid with a huge motor. Last year, he had 35 tackles and finished with 7 more sacks. With a total of 16 sacks as a NT, this kid could be a very special player. Watch him to be getting tons of looks from NFL scouts, if he can stay healthy. He had to medically red shirt in 2009 but has been back with a huge vengeance since.
Andrae Jacobs – ILB – Coastal Carolina, Andrae earned himself the honor of Defensive Player of the Year last year at Coastal Carolina after a huge year. At just 5’11 and 230 pounds, Jacobs finished with 104 tackles which was good enough for 3rd all-time on Coastal Carolina’s all time record’s. This year Jacobs will probably break that statistic, so get your pen out.
Keith Pough – OLB –Howard, Some of you have already noticed, I have a love for this kid. There is a reason for my madness. At 6’2, 228 pounds this kid is a special player, who has been an amazing player at Howard. Since his freshman year, Pough has been able to blow up the MEAC division by storm. As a two time Buck Buchanan finalist Pough has continually gotten better year by year. Look for him to be in the running for an award this season. In his career he has 277 tackles, 62 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks and 2 interceptions. Do you have a man crush too?
Joseph Lebeau – OLB – Jackson State University, Lebeau has been a stud OLB for Jackson State, and last year he showed out as a junior. As a 6’1, 245 pound transfer from Arkansas Baptist Community College, Lebeau has been a great asset to the JSU defense. He has a very good motor and is a really hard hitter. Last year he had a very big year in the SWAC. He finished the season with 15.5 sacks and could not be stopped. Watch out for Lebeau to come back this year and have a huge season for the Tigers.
B.W. Webb – CB- William & Mary, Webb is not the fastest cornerback, but he has very good technique. He was able to use his lengthy arms to knock down passes. He has intercepted 11 passes since his freshman year, and he had pretty decent speed. He has good game speed, look for the 5’11, 180 pound corner who has earned first-team all-conference honors at cornerback for the second consecutive season make it on an NFL scouts list. Watch out for Webb to keep up his ball hawking skills this year in the CAA.
Rod Woodson – SS – North Alabama, A transfer from Alabama, Woodson has had to overcome quite a bit already in his early career. Tommy Bowden was in a similar situation again, when getting Woodson, and new exactly what to do with his hard hitting safety. Woodson, helped Janoris Jenkins on several occasions this year, because Jenkins new both him and Woodson were on the same page, and it allowed Jenkins to jump a route. I think Woodson will make an impact on the field this year as well.
Malcolm Bronson – FS – McNeese State – Bronson is another one of my favorite small school prospects. When Janzen Jackson transferred to McNeese he wasn’t an automatic starter because Bronson was in his path. Bronson is a very good cover safety who could be one of the highest draft picks on this board with another good season. Bronson is a good hitter as well, who wraps up well at the point of attack. Bronson is the leader of the McNeese St. defense and will continue to help them this year.
