2012 NFL Draft analysis: Indianapolis Colts
Less than two months after releasing future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts were able to replace the legendary signal caller with Andrew Luck, the kid who is being touted as the best prospect at the position since Manning himself.
Any draft that results in drafting a potential franchise altering player like Luck has to be considered a success. The Colts also managed to surround Luck with some weapons, drafting a pair of tight ends and a wide receiver in the second and third round. The heavy focus on offense was surprising for a team that struggled so mightily on the defensive side of the ball a year ago.
Questionable Selection: TE Dwayne Allen, Round 3, pick 64
Indianapolis is attempting to give Andrew Luck some weapons to work with early in his career. The team spent an early second round draft choice on Luck’s collegiate tight end, Coby Fleener. But in a bit of a surprising move, the Colts selected another tight end, Dwayne Allen, early in the third round. While the Colts lost both of their tight ends from a year ago, using two premium selections on the position is a bit risky.
Late-Round Steal: NT Josh Chapman, Round 5, pick 136
After ignoring the defense through the first two nights of the draft, the Colts managed to find a nose tackle for their 3-4 defense in Alabama’s Josh Chapman at the top of round five. Considering one of the best nose tackles in this draft class, Chapman fell down the board because of injurie concerns. But he presents great value at the top of the fifth round.
