Babe Ruth’s Last Good Game

I saw something in last week’s SI Power Rankings that I keep thinking about: “On Saturday night, [Chipper Jones] became just the second Brave to have five RBIs in a game while 40 or older. The other? Babe Ruth, with the Boston Braves.”

↵I looked up the Ruth game. It’s this one: Saturday, May 25th, 1935. Ruth hit three home runs and the Braves lost 11-7 to the Pirates. That must have been an old 40, in 1935. His arteries were probably harder than a granite countertop in a gated community. And Ruth had only five games left in his career -- with a little better timing, that three-homer game could have been his “Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu”. Instead, he never got another hit again. Gods do not always get answers.
