The Detroit Lions will hold their rookie minicamp this weekend. They will get their first look at newly drafted offensive tackle Riley Reiff. Reiff was the 23rd overall pick of the draft after falling slightly from some pre-draft expectations of potentially being a top 15 pick.
Lions Plan To Use Riley Reiff On Both Sides At Minicamp
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Lions plan on lining him up at both left and right tackle. The former Iowa tackle played the majority of his college career at left tackle, but some people think he's a right tackle at the NFL level. Either way, the Lions need help at tackle. Jeff Backus is coming off a torn bicep and isn't getting any younger at 34 years-old while right tackle Gosder Cherilus has an injury history of his own.
It's vital for the Lion that Reiff is able to protect their franchise quarterback Matt Stafford. If he can hold down Stafford's blind-side, then all the better. But I think this could be a repeat of another former Iowa offensive tackle, Bryan Bulaga of the Green Bay Packers. Bulaga was coincidentally also the 23rd overall pick of his draft, and ended up playing the right tackle spot. I think Reiff will follow suit and hold down the right side for the Lions.
